WATCH: Athletes Speak Out Against Homophobia in Sports
After the death of his gay son Brendan in a weather-related car accident, Toronto Maple Leafs owner Brian Burke vowed to help end homophobia in hockey. He and his son Patrick, who is a scout for the Philadelphia Flyers, created the "You Can Play" project. Here's their mission statement:
You Can Play is dedicated to ensuring equality, respect and safety for all athletes, without regard to sexual orientation.
You Can Play works to guarantee that athletes are given a fair opportunity to compete, judged by other athletes and fans alike, only by what they contribute to the sport or their team’s success.
You Can Play seeks to challenge the culture of locker rooms and spectator areas by focusing only on an athlete’s skills, work ethic and competitive spirit.
Numerous teams and players have contributed to this endeavor, and the latest is from the high school students and athletic staff at Northfield Mount Hermon School in Massachusetts. It's a short, simple message with a lot of honesty and heart. Check it out, then get more info at You Can Play Project.
