According to Outsports.com, openly gay athlete Matthew Mitcham and the rest of the Australian diving team recently met up with the media to talk about the rapidly-approaching 2012 Olympics in London.
Mitcham, the defending champion in Olympic 10-meter platform diving, made an astonishing recovery from an abdominal injury in 2011 and qualified for the 2012 Olympic games with a perfect 10 from all seven judges at the Australian diving trials back in April. Now, the gorgeous gold medalist is confident he’ll be able to bring the same level of excellence to the London Olympics as well.
“I feel like the underdog again in London,” Mitcham told the press. “I’ve had a few injuries that have kept me from my best but it is good to go in without all that pressure.
“No one expects me to win and I feel more comfortable when I am in that position. I believe I can win gold again in London. I’ve done it before and know what it takes.”
An out athlete like Matthew Mitcham in the London games will undoubtedly attract more than a few new gay diving fans this summer -- in case hordes of hot guys in Speedos wasn’t reason enough.
