Orlando Cruz is Boxing’s First Out Gay Man

Orlando Cruz, the featherweight boxer from Puerto Rico, is the first man in the history of the sport to publically come out of the closet.

Cruz, who has an impressive record of 18-2-1, 9 KOs and is currently the number 4-ranked featherweight by the WBO, announced Wednesday that he wanted “to be true” to himself as he moved forward in his career, saying, "I want to try to be the best role model I can be for kids who might look into boxing as a sport and a professional career. I have and will always be a proud Puerto Rican. I have always been and always will be a proud gay man."

At this moment, the brave athlete is preparing for his next fight in Kissimmee, Fla., scheduled to go down on October 19, where he’ll defend his WBO NABO title against Jorge Pazos. If Cruz is victorious, the win could place him in line for a shot at a major title in the near future.

We’re rooting for you Orlando!
