'Bare' Tops 'The Advocate' Top 10 Queer Theater of 2012

By: Brandon Voss

The Advocate has posted its annual year-end list of the Top 10 Best LGBT-inclusive New York Theater for 2012 with the youthful musical Bare ranked at #1.

"Set in a co-ed Catholic boarding school, Jon Hartmere and Damon Intrabartolo's 2000 coming-of-age pop-rock musical has been blessedly retooled for the 'It Gets Better' era with the phenomenal Jason Hite and Taylor Trensch as star-crossed secret lovers," reads The Advocate's review of Bare, which opened Dec. 9 for an open-ended run at Off-Broadway's New World Stages. "It’s tempting to dismiss as dated and cliché, but Stafford Arima’s earnest revival is also as electric and endearing as first love itself — thanks in part to scene-stealer Missi Pyle as a spirited nun and emo-choreography by SYTYCD fave Travis Wall."

The Advocate's top 10 picks also include Cock, Now. Here. This., The Whale, Bring It On: The Musical, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, February House, The Lyons, End of the Rainbow, and Wild With Happy. Honorable mention goes to Patti Issues, Triassic Parq, Methtacular!, 3C, and The Fall to Earth.

David Greenspan's Go Back to Where You Are claimed the #1 spot on The Advocate's 2011 list; Yank! and Next Fall received top honors in 2010 and 2009, respectfully.
