Below are Andrew's May picks for Ann Arbor and Detroit
The Necto formerly the Nectarine Ballroom has been around in varying incarnations since the crazy days of the 80's. Friday nights have rainbow of gay college students to go with the lights and interesting techno. During the summer it's a bit more chill but still a great place to visit. If techno / dance isn't your thing the basement "red room" plays a variety of retro music including hits from Grease interspersed with gay divas like Britney. The necto is at 516 E Liberty St. in Ann Arbor. Across from the Michigan Theater. Friday nights college guys get in free before 10pm (other cover is $5)
Yuppie cuisine and more
The autbar is a gay yuppie haven and has been celebrating Cosmos and other gay fun since it's conversation from a Mexican restaurant 12 years ago. Friday nights they've been having a bistro custom menu downstairs and it's always a nice time to stop in and have a drink with the college kids before they migrate en masse to the necto. Adjacent to a gay and lesbian bookstore, a performance (sh aut) space and the WRAP gay community center makes this a haven for gays looking to have a cosmo and relax outdoors without having to consume copious amounts of car exhaust. It's located at 315 Braun Court in Ann Arbor just across from the farmers markets in Kerrytown.
Drag queens, noodle dancers and great dance music
Cafe Gigi's named after Gigi's returning home after being in the military is a drag owned bar in Detroit. Monday and Friday nights they have Go-go boys, Drag queen performers and amazing techno dance music. The drinks are cheap and strong (say hi to blonde bartender David). It's particularly the place to be Monday nights with amazing performer Nicki Stevens and DJ Chico (go back to the booth and say hi). Gigi's is at 16820 W. Warren Ave (just down from the warren exit off Southfield). It's Detroit so pay $$ to park in the fenced in parking in back and call 313 584-6525 if you get lost. The Monday night show starts around 11pm. Cover is $2 before 10:40pm.
Off the beaten path and then some
For the truly adventurous, The Detroit Eagle is a leather (S&M) bar in Detroit. It's off holden over near Henry Ford hospital just off M-10 as well as the Trumbull exit off of I-94. Sunday night they have an alternative dance party atmosphere which attracts the alternative (even straight) crowd. They've been known to attract Detroit bicycling clubs. The bar itself has no sign other than a big eagle on the building which is in a most abandoned industrial area. Be warned upstairs on the 4th Sunday the gay bondage club meets (check it out or not as you desire). It's in Detroit as park where the security car (with a yellow flashing light on top) can see you and call (313 873-6969) if you get lost. No cover.
The Cavern Club
Bizarre ambiance at this primarily straight club in Ann Arbor can lead to a fun time. It's actually three floors in one each with a different style of music. The usually have a live band downstairs and the feel goes from that of an abandoned subway station or a high end dance club (where you can dance in the window). Make sure you check out a performance of the Killer Flamingos a Dearborn based cover band that performs there with some regularity). Check their website for performance schedules and drink specials. The Cavern club is located at 210 South 1st Street in Ann Arbor.
