Below are Jim's August picks for Denver, Colorado.

Genuine Jazz & Wine Festival, Breckenridge
A must-see Colorado mountain town is Breckenridge, where gold was discovered along the Blue River in the summer of 1859. The city has more than 350 historic buildings, making it the largest historic district in the state of Colorado.
The best of jazz comes together in this former mining town for the Genuine Jazz & Wine Festival. Amidst scenic grandeur, internationally renowned talent performs at free outdoor daytime concerts and ticketed indoor concerts. Visit www.genuinejazz.com.
While visiting, make sure to stop by Mary's Mountain Cookies (www.marysmountaincookies.com) for a White Out sandwich cookie (think two Snickerdoodle cookies with butter cream frosting) and have dinner at one of my favorite bistros in the state, Modis (www.modisbreck.com).
In October 2006, the Denver Art Museum expanded with the addition of the architecturally moving Frederic C. Hamilton Building, which was designed by world famous architect, Daniel Libeskind. The Hamilton Building's design consists of geometric, titanium-clad angles, which are to reflect the nearby Rocky Mountain peaks.
In August, the 356,000-square-foot museum complex features several exhibitions, including Drawings, Anyone?. The exhibit showcases drawings in a variety of media-including pencil, charcoal, ink, pastel, and oil-by contemporary artists like Steve DiBenedetto and Rebecca Horn.
Second Home is the spot for Denver's "Happy Evening" with small plate and drink specials offered every night until midnight. Relax in the sophisticated and stylish bar or open-air patio with a 15-foot fire pit. The establishment touts their food as "polished comfort food," such as the addictive "couch potatoes"-sweet potato chips with white cheddar, sour cream, and chive dip. Had a little too much fun? You can always walk upstairs to your hotel room at the chic JW Marriott.
Vinyl Sundays in the Summer
The hottest of the hot gravitate to Vinyl Nightclub's rooftop for CLIMAX Sundays, which are held each Sunday (until Halloween) from 4:00 p.m. to close. For three years, my friends and I have enjoyed this spectacular rooftop setting with mountain sunset views and pulsating music. In August, CLIMAX brings you the Official AIDS Walk Pre-party on August 9 and the White Party on August 23, benefiting El Futuro, the center for GLBT Latinos.
The Center August 20
Founded in 1976, The GLBT Community Center of Colorado ("The Center") is the only statewide, nonprofit community center dedicated to providing support and advocacy for Colorado's GLBT population. On August 20, The Center will host an evening of savory sensations at a magnificent private residence recently feature in LUXE Magazine. Attendees will enjoy five pairings of wines and cuisines prepared by wine specialist Cynthia Asencio of Vino 100 and culinary connoisseur Lea Ann Purvis. Tickets are $75 per person.
