My name:

Eddie

My age: 30

My profession: Assistant service manager at an import car dealership

City/town: Cape Girardeau, Mo.

Relationship status: Single

Sexuality: Gay

My Vehicle: 1995 Volkswagen Jetta GLS

What do you like best about your ride?

It's paid for. I don't miss car payments.

Do you like to take road trips in your car?  Describe your favorite road trip -- where did you go? What did you do?

I do enjoy road trips. My favorite road trip was when I moved from Alexandria, Va., to Cape Girardeau, Mo. I had my car packed as full as it could be with stuff I didn't want to live without and my two cats. The tail end was almost dragging the ground. 890 miles later I arrived and began another chapter in my life. This was 11 months ago, and there is STILL cat hair on the headliner that wont let go.

Do you like tinkering under the hood, or do you leave repairs and routine maintenance to your mechanic?

I do like working on my car. When I bought the car, it had a laundry list of things wrong with it, which is why I got it so cheap. It would have been worthless to someone who couldn't work on the car himself or herself. I got it caught up on its maintenance, replaced the clutch, front lower control arms, entire suspension, water pump, timing belt, coolant bottle, cruise control pump, rear wheel bearings, rear brakes, four new tires, rebuilt the shifter assembly and replaced a plethora of interior and exterior cosmetic parts.

What special touches have you added to your car that reflect your personality and individuality?

My car style has always been OEM+, meaning I appreciate the way a car comes from the factory, and prefer to modify the car with tasteful mods that don't make it look cheap. When I replaced the suspension I opted for some delrin and poly suspension bushings as well as a H&R Touring Cup Kit suspension setup. It lowered the car about an inch overall, vastly improved the handling, but it is still comfortable to drive every day. My car is sporty, fun, functional, and (finally) dependable. I hope people find I'm the same.

What is the most you've ever paid for a car?  What is the most you would ever pay for a car?

The most I paid for a car was 20K for a brand-new 2003 Jetta that I had four cars ago. I normally buy used cars, and my last few cars have been fixer-uppers that I seem to get rid of once I'm done with them.

Do you have a great memory of a date that relates to you car? Describe that night (or day).

I recently drove to Evansville, Ind., to meet a guy I've been talking to. At the time, we didn't know each other very well. We met for dinner and afterwards we continued our date in my car. We took it to go ride go-karts, play mini golf, and then we drove around Evansville for a while. We continued getting to know each other and had a great date just driving around.

Do you find yourself more attracted to people with similar car tastes to your own?  Or doesn't it matter?

*Sheepish grin* Yes. One of the things I look for in a guy is that he has to be able to drive a manual transmission. If he happens to like cars too, well that's just icing on the cake. :)

If you had an unlimited budget and could change anything you wanted on your car, what modifications or accessories would you add?

I would replace the seats in it with some of the sportier seats that came in some of the other trim levels of the Jetta/Golf, probably do some sort of forced induction, replace the exhaust with something that gives it a lil’ more growl without being annoying, and get the dents, scratches, and rust fixed. Otherwise, I'm pretty happy with it now.

Do you think your car has a personality or soul? What kind of sound or behavior does it have that makes it unmistakably your car?

My car has a defiant personality and refuses to let me have everything working at once. If I fix something, it seems something else always breaks, usually instantly. People who ride in my car always comment on the central locking pneumatic pump that runs too long after the doors unlock. Everyone always asks, "What's that humming?" I have to explain to people in the backseat that my rear window regulators are broken (a common thing in this model of VW) and that if they want to roll their window down, they'll have to help it. At least they go back up on their own.... for now...

Have you upgraded the car stereo? What is your "dream" sound system?

I installed a lower-end Sony in-dash MP3-capable CD player and put in a Sirius satellite radio receiver. Eventually I want to replace all of the speakers (they are old and one is blown), install a head unit that has built-in satellite radio, Bluetooth, and has iPod control, and possibly a small sub/amp in the trunk. I do tend to crank the music when I'm alone in the car.

What aspect of your ride most attracted you when you decided to own and drive it?

It was nearly free. Who would pass on the chance to buy a car for $67?

Have you ever pushed your car to its performance limit? What was the fastest speed?

My brother once told me I drive like there are cockroaches under the pedals. I am definitely hard on cars. I've calmed down quite a bit, and try not to scare people in the car with me, but when I'm alone in it, I do push it a lot harder. The fastest I have had it was 110 mph and it was still solid and ready to keep going, but I was running out of road so I had to let off.

Are you a member of any car clubs or other auto-related organizations?

I am a member of vwvortex.com, the Internet's largest VW enthusiast website. I also work in a vehicle repair shop, so cars are also my livelihood.

What was the first car you ever had? Do you ever get nostalgic for it?

My first vehicle was a 1985 Ford Ranger. At the time it was 10 years old and had almost 300,000 miles on it. It was beat up, worn out, and liked to break down and strand me in the middle of nowhere, usually after dark. It had an AM radio, no heat, no power steering, no power brakes, and probably was pretty unsafe, but when you're 16, you just want to be able to drive. I have a lot of fun memories in it, and I reminisce from time to time.

If you could trade your ride in for any other car, what would it be, regardless of the price?

If I HAD to trade it in, and I could get anything I'd go for a Mercedes-Benz G-wagon. But, even when I eventually buy another car, this Jetta will always have a place in my driveway.

If you share a burning passion for your car like thousands of other gays, now you have a chance to let the world know. We don't just want to see your auto obsession, we want to hear all about it!
