Jonathan Drives 'The Beast'
My name: Jonathan
My age: 20
My profession: Diesel mechanic
City/town: Sagle, Idaho
Relationship status: Dating someone
My Truck: 2000 Dodge Ram 2500 w/5.9-liter 24-valve Cummins Turbo Diesel. 4x4.
What is the thing you like best about your ride?
I like that everyone in my hometown recognizes my truck and when I go somewhere new I always catch people checking it out. The truck has been straight-piped, so it’s a very loud truck when I want to get on it.
Do you like to take road trips in your car? Describe your favorite road trip -- where did you go? What did you do?
I take road trips all the time! My truck sees just about 40k per year. My favorite road trips are towing my 26-foot travel trailer out to Montana or out to the coast in Oregon.
Do you like tinkering under the hood, or do you leave repairs and routine maintenance to your mechanic?
I do ALL the work in the truck myself. I don't trust other people to do any kind of work on my truck. Not even a tire rotation or an oil change. It’s all done by me.
What special touches have you added to your car that reflect your personality and individuality?
My truck has a 2'' leveling kit, 35'' BFG's, Weld Racing wheels, straight 4'' exhaust, air intake off an 11-liter Cummins engine, new transmission, Superchips programmer, new pillar-mounted gauge pod, CB radio, 105-gallon fuel tank, brush guard, and a 9,000-pound Warn winch.
What is the most you’ve ever paid for a car? What is the most you would ever pay for a car?
I paid 16,000 bucks for my '01 Ford Super Duty V10. I would probably pay up to 20 [thousand] if it was the perfect truck. But I always like to add on to whatever I buy.
Do you have a great memory of a date that relates to you car? Describe that night (or day).
My best date memory isn't in my Dodge. It’s in my Ford pickup, which I own too. It’s a 1977 Ford F-250 (an old farm truck of mine), and I took my boyfriend out to eat and had him ride in the middle seat. It felt just like those old country movies with the cowboy and his girlfriend, but of course it was me and my boyfriend. It was really romantic for both of us.
Do you find yourself more attracted to people with car tastes similar to your own? Or doesn’t it matter?
I don't think any other gay guy has truck taste like me. I own four full-size pickups and will not own a car...ever. Most other gay guys love Hondas. I won’t own a foreign vehicle.
If you had an unlimited budget and could change anything you wanted on your car, what modifications or accessories would you add?
I would put in a dual turbo kit and an upgraded fueling system, including new injectors and a second lift pump.
Do you think your car has a personality or soul? What kind of sound or behavior does it have that makes it unmistakably your car?
My truck definitely has personality. People always know when I am coming since the exhaust has no muffler. You can hear my truck from about a mile or two away...if I am playing nice.
Do you have a nickname for your car?
It’s the beast.
Have you upgraded the car stereo? What is your "dream" sound system?
The stereo is stock. I have a satellite radio and an iPod I hardwired into the stock radio. I don't see any reason to upgrade it in this truck. It has a really nice stock system.
What aspect of your ride most attracted you when you decided to own and drive it?
I liked that it has the Cummins diesel. Its a very well-designed engine that's not just used in pickups but in industrial trucks too. My other trucks had all been Ford Powerstroke 7.3-liter diesels, so it was time to get something new.
Have you ever pushed your car to its performance limit? What was the fastest speed?
I have done 100 mph before, but this truck isn't made for speed. This truck is made for pulling. I have rolled across the scales at 28,000 pounds, truck and trailer weight combined.
Are you a member of any car clubs or other auto-related organizations?
I am a member of a few diesel forums online for Fords and Dodges.
What was the first car you ever had? Do you ever get nostalgic for it?
My first truck was a 1977 Ford F-250 with a 460 engine...and I still have it. I won’t get rid of it.
If you could trade your ride in for any other car, what would it be, regardless of the price?
I would get a newer Dodge with a crew cab so I don’t have to drive my crew cab Ford diesel when I am hauling people with me.
If you share a burning passion for your car like thousands of other gays, now you have a chance to let the world know. We don't just want to see your auto obsession, we want to hear all about it!
