Geoffrey Mac has a bold aesthetic that incorporates amazing prints with innovative construction. His original work has been worn by icons such as Lady Gaga, Debbie Harry, Britney Spears, and Sharon Needles on stage, in music videos and on magazine covers. We checked in with Geoffrey on giving expression to “the creative soul” in us all.

Gay.net: What role has fashion played in your journey of self-discovery [as a gay man]?

Geoffrey Mac: Fashion was instrumental to my development, particularly when I was working as a club personality in Chicago, which was a perfect venue for me to wear whatever I wanted… and get paid for it! Also, painting up into certain personas helped me detach from reality, express myself, and feel more confident with my identity. My designs are a physical manifestation of my imagination. Fashion should be about self-expression; a creative outlet and not about keeping up with current trends or blending in to the masses. By cultivating my own bold sense of style and not being afraid to stand out, it has connected me with other like-minded creatives and artists, which helps create a sense of community - something especially important for gay youth.

Where do you want to take men's fashion?

I feel as though men's fashion is going in a direction that is more experimental and free. Finally! With everything I create I try to invoke a sense of futurism combined with an element of nostalgia, and also make it streamlined and timeless. I love to combine different, unexpected influences and eras. With the Geoffrey Mac brand, we strive to offer something that’s unlike anything else on the market…clothes and accessories that are conversation pieces and fun to wear. What piece of fashion can you not live without during the summer? I live in tank tops during the summer, I get pretty sweaty cuz I’m 50% Italian. Our tanks are always a customer favorite for the Spring / Summer season. We’re super excited to now have GMAC tanks that are as low as $35. What advice do you have for guys who are looking to upgrade their style? Stop taking fashion so seriously… have fun with your clothes. Be adventurous and unafraid to try new things. Guys who have never worn leggings before have been attracted to ours and discovered they can give a masculine punk-inspired look. Accessories can always elevate a look, and give it a fresh touch. Put on something that makes you smile, get out of the mirror, and get outside.

You’ve worked with an impressive list of music icons. Who are some of the performers currently on your wish list to dress?

Pharrell, Jared Leto, Brooke Candy, Rita Ora, Robyn, and Little Dragon are a few at the top of my list right now. They’re all strong individuals that would be a good match for my aesthetic.

What are some projects you are currently working on?

I’m styling a video shoot with Adore Delano for an upcoming single, reuniting with the same director / producer team who I worked with on the Sharon Needles “Dressed to Kill” video… Ben and Katelyn Simkins of Geek Mythology. I’m also excited to be developing a men’s underwear line for the legendary Cazwell, which we’re hoping to launch just in time for Gay Pride!
