Style Q/A With Charlie by Matthew Zink

By: Robert Hebert

Celebrated swimwear designer Matthew Zink has worked under fashion luminaries including Tom Ford, Stefano Pilati, and Carolina Herrera. No wonder his luxe, sophisticated style – inspired by the sexually potent 70’s – has translated into commercial success with Charlie swim and sportswear.  We sat down with the designer to see what motivates and inspires him. Where do you want to take men's fashion?

Matthew Zink: I believe in celebrating a man's physique with timelessly sexy approach. The joyful sexuality and iconic style of the late 1970's and 1980's is where I draw my inspiration. I want our customers to always feel handsome in their Charlie pieces, and above all else... sexy!

What piece of fashion can you not live without during the summer?

My Charlie's of course. I always have a classic Black Lifeguard Brief wherever I go, but this season a few of my favorites are our Bandana Print and Caribbean Blue styles. During the summer, I also live in my Charlie Italian leather sandals. Each pair are handmade in Italy and are the perfect summer footwear that are both comfortable and handsome.

What advice do you have for guys who are looking to upgrade their style?

Spend your money on quality, not quantity. I believe you will always feel more confident in well made, perfectly fitting pieces. Let you get the attention, not your clothes. Choose pieces that compliment your assets and don't feel shy to show off your legs.

What direction is your brand headed for the next season?

For 2015, we will continue to offer a timeless swimwear experience with a few new details and surprises to delight our customers. And I'm very pleased to announce the launch of our Mens Underwear Collection, available this October only at Get a peek at the Charlie by MZ collection at
